Chapter Twenty Six

Racing across the Dalron landscape, Tir kept one hand on the reins, the other arm keeping Hunter secured firmly to him. While others were racing around him, keeping an eye on the area, his sole focus was on the man in his arms. “I am so sorry. Sorry for not accepting what I was feeling. Sorry for not telling you. Sorry for not letting you into my heart. Sorry for walking away from what was brewing between us. I am so damn sorry for everything. I don’t deserve you…” Tir blinked away the tear pooling in the corner of his eye, refusing to give in to the emotion, trying to stay strong. “I don’t deserve you forgiving me, but when you make it out of this, because you have to come through this, I’ll be waiting for you. No more running. No more hiding. I want it all.”

He let go of the reins, and with a trembling hand, pulled the necklace Hunter’s siblings had given him from around his neck. Immediately missing the warmth it somehow gave him, he carefully slid it over Hunter’s head, fixing it so it rested perfectly against his chest. “They wanted you to have this. It was a private moment between the two men, even if one was unconscious. But, a heavy weight settled in his stomach. If Corin couldn’t help Hunter, if his friend and teammate didn’t pull through, the devastation wrought on their group would be astronomical. From him and the other Avanti to Tir and the Derin, the heartbreak would be bad, but the effect on those courageous siblings of Hunter would be nothing short of soul-destroying. He turned away from the scene, the emotion clawing at his heart, and locked gazes with Naris, on the other side of Tir. The emotions in his gaze said everything. Naris must have heard every word as well. They held gazes for a moment before Dax had to look away.

He’d come close to losing all his teammates at one point or another over the course of their lives together, but this felt different. They were all happy and settled. He’d often wondered if they would ever have peace in their lives. To be so close to achieving it and to lose one of their team? No. None of them would survive the loss of Hunter. He cast his gaze up past the sun, beyond what he could see, to the stars he knew were out there. “If there is
